What we repair and how we do it
A radiator has a valve at each end: a control valve, which is either a manual wheelhead or a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV), and a lockshield, which sets the flow so the radiator balances against the rest of the circuit. We diagnose and repair faults across all three. The control valve is where most failures show up, the lockshield is where a lot of cold-radiator complaints are actually solved, and getting both right is the difference between a radiator that heats evenly and one that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top.
On site we first establish whether the fault can be repaired in place or needs a new valve. A TRV head that has seized or a thermostatic cartridge that no longer pushes the pin can often be freed or swapped without touching the valve body. A weep from the spindle is frequently a gland that can be repacked or nipped up. A split body, a stripped thread or a corroded valve gets replaced. We carry common 8mm microbore and 15mm valves so most jobs are a single visit.
Radiator valve leaking from the spindle or the joint
If a radiator valve is weeping from around the spindle under the head, the gland packing has usually failed, and on many valves this is repaired by tightening or repacking the gland nut rather than replacing the whole valve. If the leak is at the compression joint where the valve meets the copper tail, the olive or the nut has worked loose or the olive has deformed, and the fix is to drain or isolate, remake the joint with a fresh olive and reseat it correctly. The mistake we are often called in to put right is a previous over-tightened joint that has crushed the olive or cracked a brass body, which then weeps worse than before, so we tighten to the point the joint seals and stop there.
TRV pin stuck and the radiator staying cold
A very common London call after the heating comes back on in autumn is a radiator that stays stone cold while the rest of the house is warm. Nine times out of ten the thermostatic pin under the TRV head has stuck down in the closed position, usually because the head was left off over summer or set to frost and the pin seized. We always check this before condemning a radiator, because a stuck pin is a five-minute fix that an inexperienced eye mistakes for a failed radiator.
Replacing a valve without draining the whole system
On sealed combi and pressurised systems, common in London flats and new builds, a full drain-down loses system pressure, risks introducing air and means re-pressurising and bleeding the entire property afterwards. Where access allows we freeze the pipe either side of the valve instead, swap the valve while the freeze holds, then thaw and check, which keeps the rest of the system untouched. On open-vented systems in older houses a controlled partial drain is often the cleaner route. We choose the method to suit the system in front of us, not a one-size approach.

Second, refilling without proper bleeding leaves air locked in the radiator, so it stays cold and the customer assumes the valve is still faulty. We bleed and re-check every radiator we disturb. Third, draining a system and refilling without re-dosing corrosion inhibitor strips the protection out and accelerates internal sludge and pinhole corrosion, so where we have drained we re-add inhibitor.
