How much does it cost to fit a door handle or lock in London?
Lock, hinge and handle work is charged by time, at £60 + VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 + VAT for each additional 30 minutes, and many jobs such as swapping a handle or adjusting a hinge are done within the first half-hour or hour.
- £60 + VAT for the first 30 minutes
- £30 + VAT per additional 30 minutes
- Saturday appointments charged at the same weekday rate
- No separate call-out fee
- An estimate is given before any work begins
A worked example: replacing a worn internal door handle set on a like-for-like backplate is usually finished within the first half-hour at £60 + VAT, while fitting a new mortice lock into a door that was not previously cut for one takes longer, often an hour or more at £90 + VAT plus the lock, because the mortice has to be chiselled to the exact depth, the faceplate recessed flush, and the keep aligned on the frame. The reason a simple handle swap is quick but a lock or a dropped door is not is the marking and the chiselling: a lock or strike plate fitted a few millimetres out will not throw or latch, so the time is in getting the alignment right, not in turning the screws.

What we fit and repair, and how
We fit and repair the full range of door ironmongery on internal and external doors: loose, broken or dated handles, mortice locks, cylinder (Euro) locks, latches, hinges, and the strike plates and keeps they work against. Most calls that come in as a broken handle or a lock that will not turn are actually an alignment problem, where the door has moved on its hinges and the latch or bolt no longer lines up with the keep. We diagnose that before replacing parts, because swapping a perfectly good handle will not fix a door that has dropped. We mark and cut accurately, fit the new ironmongery square, and test the door through a full open, close and lock cycle before leaving.
Why won't my door close or latch properly?
A door that will not close or latch has usually dropped on its hinges or swollen so the latch no longer meets the keep, and Silver Saints fixes it by adjusting or repacking the hinges, easing the door edge where it binds, and realigning the strike plate so the latch catches cleanly. On older London doors the hinge screws often spin in worn timber, so we plug and re-fix the hinge into solid wood rather than just driving a longer screw that will work loose again. Getting the door hanging square is what makes the handle and lock work, which is why we look at the hinges first.
Can you fit a new lock or replace a door lock?
Silver Saints fit and replace mortice locks, cylinder (Euro) locks, nightlatches and rim locks on internal and external doors, cutting the mortice and recessing the faceplate accurately and aligning the keep on the frame so the bolt throws fully. Fitting a lock into a door not previously cut for one is a careful job: the mortice depth has to match the lock body without weakening the stile, and the keep has to sit exactly where the bolt lands. We fit the lock you have or supply one to suit the door, and we test that the key turns smoothly and the bolt throws and withdraws cleanly.
Replacing a dropped or sticking door handle and spindle
A handle that is loose, droops or no longer springs back is usually a worn spindle, a failed return spring in the handle, or screws that have lost their grip in the door, and Silver Saints replaces the handle set or spindle and re-fixes it securely so it operates the latch properly. On period doors with thicker stiles the spindle length matters, and a handle that feels sloppy is often a spindle that is too short engaging only part of the follower. We match the right spindle and backplate so the handle sits flush and works without play.
Locks, hinges and handles across London property types
London doors vary enormously and that changes the job. In Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Wandsworth, Hackney, Islington and Camden the internal doors are often original, heavy and have moved over a century, so hinges are worn and frames are out of square, which is why so many handle and lock faults there are really alignment jobs. In Kensington, Chelsea and Marylebone mansion blocks the front doors are frequently solid and fitted with high-quality mortice locks where precise keep alignment matters. In 1960s and 1970s blocks the internal doors are lighter hollow-core, where fixings need care so they hold. In modern new-build flats around Nine Elms, Battersea and Canary Wharf the doors are often fire-rated with specific intumescent and hinge requirements that must not be compromised. Telling us the door and the fault when you book means we arrive with the right ironmongery and approach.
Fire doors and the detail that matters
On a fire door, the ironmongery is part of the fire rating, so hinges, locks, latches and any intumescent protection have to be the correct specification and fitted without compromising the door, which matters in flats, HMOs and communal areas across London. We do not modify a fire door in a way that would void its rating, and where a job touches fire-door ironmongery we fit like-for-like rated components. On a standard internal door, the judgement is simpler but the same principle applies: the right fixing into the right material, square alignment, and a full function test before we leave. That care is the difference between a handle that works for years and one that loosens again in a month.
Combine lock and handle work with other door jobs in one visit
Because a Silver Saint is multi-trade, a lock or handle visit is a good moment to sort other door and joinery jobs in the same appointment and avoid a second call-out fee. A door that sticks as well as failing to latch often needs shaving a swollen door alongside the hinge adjustment. An external door that lets in draughts can be handled with draught proofing of external doors while we are fitting the new lock. And if you are refreshing a room, we can combine the ironmongery with furniture assembly in the same visit. Mention everything when you book and we will send a Saint equipped for the lot.
