What does blind fitting cost in London?

Most standard blind installations are completed within the first 30-minute minimum charge, so the typical cost is low and predictable. Silver Saints charges £60 plus VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 plus VAT for each additional 30 minutes, with no call-out fee, and Saturday is charged at the same weekday rate. During that time your handyman assesses the reveal type and wall surface, selects the correct bracket fixings, measures and marks the bracket positions, drills and fixes the brackets, and hangs and adjusts the blind. Most single-window roller and Venetian installations take 15 to 20 minutes. Custom-trimmed blinds where cutting to width is required take 25 to 45 minutes per window depending on the reveal and the cutting method required for that blind type.

  • £60 plus VAT for the first 30 minutes
  • £30 plus VAT per additional 30 minutes
  • Saturday appointments at the same weekday rate
  • No call-out fee on any Silver Saints appointment

Blind types we fit in London

Silver Saints handymen install every type of domestic and commercial blind across London. A typical week covers roller blinds in Islington flats, Roman blinds in Kensington townhouses, blackout blinds in Hackney rental properties between tenancies, Venetian blinds in Westminster offices, and day and night blinds in Wandsworth new-build apartments.

  • Roller blinds, fitted inside or outside the window recess depending on the reveal depth and the blind width
  • Roman blinds, precise bracket height required to ensure the fabric stacks correctly when raised, weight of the fabric affects the fixing requirement
  • Venetian blinds, aluminium and wood, requiring accurate level alignment so the slats tilt and close correctly
  • Day and night blinds, dual-fabric roller mechanism, bracket alignment is critical for smooth operation
  • Blackout blinds, often wider and heavier than standard rollers, fixing into the reveal or wall must be rated to the blind weight
  • Vertical blinds, track header must be precisely level and well-fixed at both ends and at regular intervals, failure to support the full track length causes carrier sag

Wall types and reveal types in London properties

Blind fitting in London is not a single job, it is at least five different jobs depending on the wall construction behind the reveal. Every London property type presents a different surface, and the bracket fixing that works in a 2010 new-build flat will fail in a Victorian terrace reveal within months.

Lath and plaster reveals

In unrenovated Victorian and Edwardian properties, the window reveal is almost always lath and plaster, the same three-coat lime plaster construction on horizontal timber laths used throughout these buildings. The specific challenge for blind fitting is that the reveal surface is narrow and the plaster layer shallow, typically 15 to 20mm of plaster over the lath. Standard plastic wall plugs are too long for this surface and will push through the plaster without gripping.

The correct approach for lath and plaster reveals is a short masonry screw directly into the lath itself, the horizontal timber strip sits approximately 12mm behind the plaster face and provides a secure fixing point. We locate the lath position by tapping the reveal and use a sharp 5mm masonry bit at low speed to avoid vibrating through the thin plaster layer. For heavier blinds over 5kg, we locate the nearest stud behind the reveal and fix into that instead.

Plasterboard reveals

Modern new-build flats and converted properties with plasterboard window reveals require cavity anchors rated to the blind weight. The plasterboard in a window reveal is typically 12.5mm fixed directly to the masonry or frame behind, with no stud to fix into. Standard screws will pull through plasterboard under the weight of a blind within weeks. We use snap-toggle or spring-toggle cavity anchors for anything over 3kg, and for heavier blackout blinds we always locate the surrounding masonry through the plasterboard and fix at a deeper point.

Solid brick reveals

Solid brick reveals are found in Victorian terraced houses throughout inner London, particularly common in Islington, Hackney, Wandsworth and Southwark where the window frame sits directly in a brick reveal without a plaster finish. We use a standard 6mm masonry bit at medium speed into the brick face and a nylon plug with a 40mm screw. Drilling into the mortar joint should be avoided in older London stock brick as the lime mortar is softer than the brick and the plug does not grip reliably.

Tiled reveals

Bathroom and kitchen window reveals are often tiled, making blind bracket installation the most technically demanding of all surface types. Diamond-tipped tile bits are essential, standard masonry bits will skate across the glaze and crack the tile. We use low drill speed, mark the drill point with masking tape to prevent skating, and apply light pressure throughout. On older handmade or terracotta tiles with thinner glaze, we drill into the grout joint rather than the tile face wherever the bracket position allows, to avoid cracking the glaze under vibration.

Concrete reveals

Concrete window reveals are found in the post-war housing blocks of Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Hackney and Southwark, and in the modern apartment developments of Canary Wharf and the wider Docklands area. Standard drills will not penetrate concrete reveal walls effectively. We carry an SDS plus hammer drill and use 6mm SDS masonry bits for concrete applications. Fixings are heavier-duty concrete anchors rather than standard nylon plugs.

Bay window blind fitting in London

Bay windows are one of the most frequently requested and technically specific blind fitting jobs across London's Victorian and Edwardian housing stock. The wrong approach is to fit a single wide blind across the whole bay on a ceiling fix, this works for a curtain track but not for most blind types, because the blind cannot follow the angle of the bay and the fabric bunches at the return angles when raised.

The correct approach for most bay windows is to fit individual blinds to each pane of glass within the bay. This requires measuring the inside reveal width of each pane separately, as no two panes in a Victorian bay are exactly the same width due to settling and movement in the structure over a century or more. A bay window with three panes might have three different blind widths, each needing a custom-trimmed blind or a made-to-measure order.

For deep bays where a single blind across the opening is preferred, we assess the ceiling fixing depth, the bracket position relative to the plaster cornice, and the drop required for the blind to hang clear of the window furniture. Bay window blind fitting is more time-intensive than a standard single window because of the individual measurement and adjustment required for each pane. Three-pane bay windows typically take 45 to 75 minutes in total.

Recess fitting versus face fitting

Every blind installation involves a choice between recess fitting and face fitting. Recess fitting means the bracket is fixed inside the window reveal so the blind sits within the window opening. Face fitting means the bracket is fixed to the wall above the window so the blind covers the full window frame and extends beyond it on each side and above.

Recess fitting requires the reveal to be deep enough to accommodate the blind mechanism when raised, and the reveal surface to be in a condition to take the bracket fixing. In Victorian properties with shallow reveals or reveals where the plaster is in poor condition, face fitting is often the better structural approach. We advise on which is appropriate at the start of the visit based on the reveal depth, the blind mechanism depth and the wall surface condition.

Blind fitting in rental and managed properties

A significant proportion of Silver Saints blind fitting work in London is in tenanted properties, managed apartment blocks and landlord homes. Between-tenancy blind replacement is one of the most common single-trade requests from London managing agents, window blinds are among the highest-wear fittings in a rental property and are routinely replaced at the end of each tenancy.

We are experienced in working within building management access requirements, completing a tidy visit with minimal wall impact, and combining blind fitting with other between-tenancy tasks in a single appointment. A single Silver Saints visit can cover a full flat's blinds, hang mirrors, replace a shower head, fix a dripping tap and check the smoke alarms, eliminating four or five separate contractor visits and their individual call-out charges.

The multi-trade advantage

No specialist blind fitter can offer what Silver Saints provides: a multi-trade handyman who can combine blind fitting with any other job in the same visit. Common same-visit combinations for blind fitting include fitting curtain rails in other rooms while the blind fitting is done, hanging mirrors, TV wall mounting, replacing a damaged window sill, or repairing the plasterwork around an old bracket hole before fitting the new blind. One visit, one invoice, no separate call-out charges between jobs.

Blind fitting FAQs

Can you fit blinds today in London?

Same-day blind fitting is usually available across London subject to handyman availability, so call Silver Saints on 0207 0999 199 before midday for the best chance of a same-day appointment, or book online at bookings.silversaints.com for a next-day slot Monday to Saturday.

How much does blind fitting cost in London?

Silver Saints charges £60 plus VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 plus VAT for each additional 30 minutes with no call-out fee, most single-window blind installations are completed within the first 30-minute charge, and a bay window with three individual blinds typically takes 45 to 75 minutes.

Can you fit blinds on lath and plaster reveals?

Yes, Silver Saints handymen use short masonry screws driven directly into the lath at low drill speed, avoiding the standard plastic wall plugs that pull through the thin plaster layer under the weight of a blind, and lath and plaster reveals are the most common surface type in unrenovated Victorian and Edwardian London properties.

Can you fit blinds in a bay window in London?

Yes, Silver Saints fits individual blinds to each pane within a bay window, measuring each reveal separately as Victorian bay window panes in London are rarely the same width, and for deep bays where a single blind across the opening is preferred the team assesses the ceiling fixing position and advises on the correct approach at the visit.

Can you fit blinds on tiled window reveals?

Yes, Silver Saints handymen use diamond-tipped tile drill bits and low drill speed to avoid cracking the glaze on tiled bathroom and kitchen reveals, and where the bracket position allows they drill into the grout joint rather than the tile face to reduce the risk of tile damage on older or handmade tiles.

Do you fit blinds in rental and managed properties in London?

Yes, Silver Saints regularly fits blinds in tenanted homes, managed apartment blocks and landlord properties across London and is experienced in working within building management access requirements and combining blind fitting with other between-tenancy tasks in a single visit.

Do I need to supply the blinds?

Yes, you supply the blinds and their brackets, and Silver Saints provides all wall fixings, specialist drill bits and the expertise to install them correctly for your wall type and reveal surface.

Can you remove old blinds before fitting new ones?

Yes, Silver Saints can remove existing blinds and brackets as part of the same appointment and make good the bracket holes where practical before fitting the new blinds.

Can you fit blinds in a listed building in London?

Yes, for listed properties where drilling into the reveal is restricted, Silver Saints can advise on tension-fit blind systems that require no fixings at all, or on specialist no-drill bracket systems suitable for listed building requirements.

Which London boroughs do you cover for blind fitting?

Silver Saints covers all London boroughs for blind fitting including Islington, Camden, Hackney, Wandsworth, Southwark, Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Westminster, Greenwich, Lewisham, Barnet, Ealing, Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton and Waltham Forest, plus the TW, KT, CR and BR postcodes.

What does curtain rail fitting cost in London?

Most standard curtain poles on a flat wall are completed within the first 30-minute minimum charge, so the typical cost is low and predictable. Silver Saints charges £60 plus VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 plus VAT for each additional 30 minutes, with no call-out fee, and Saturday is charged at the same weekday rate. During that time your handyman assesses the wall type above the window, identifies the fixing positions, marks the bracket heights to account for any coving or architrave, drills and fixes the brackets, and mounts the pole with all rings and finials. Bay window track fitting takes longer, typically 30 to 60 minutes for a standard three-sided bay, because the track must be measured to the exact bay angle on site before cutting and bending to shape.

  • £60 plus VAT for the first 30 minutes
  • £30 plus VAT per additional 30 minutes

Bay window curtain track fitting in London

Bay window curtain track fitting is the most technically specific job in this category and the one where experience makes the biggest visible difference. A bay track fitted with incorrect bracket spacing, the wrong fixing depth or a track that has not been bent to the exact bay angle will sag, pull away from the wall or cause the curtains to bunch at the return angles. These failures are common in London properties where bay tracks have been fitted by non-specialist handymen.

The Silver Saints method is to measure the bay angle on site using a protractor and to cut or bend the flexible track to the measured profile before fixing a single bracket. Victorian bay windows in London are almost never a perfect 45-degree or 135-degree angle, the actual angles vary by property, by age of construction and by decades of settling and movement. A track bent to 135 degrees in a bay that is actually 128 degrees will produce a gap at the return bracket that causes the curtain to catch on every draw.

Bracket spacing for bay tracks must account for the weight of the curtain. For unlined curtains on a standard 2.4-metre bay, brackets at 300mm centres are adequate. For lined or interlined curtains, or for blackout curtains which are significantly heavier per metre, brackets at 200mm centres with a reinforced wall fixing at each end are the correct specification. We assess the curtain weight and track span before drilling and advise on the correct bracket count.

The fixing surface above a Victorian bay window is almost always lath and plaster. Bracket positions must be set below the cornice line, at a height that allows the curtain to cover the full window height when closed. In rooms with deep cornicing, this can constrain the bracket height significantly and requires careful assessment before marking the fixing positions.

Curtain rails in Victorian and Edwardian London properties

Period property curtain rail fitting is more involved than the equivalent job in a modern flat because of three specific factors: lath and plaster walls, decorative cornicing and deep window architraves.

Lath and plaster is the dominant wall type in unrenovated Victorian and Edwardian houses throughout inner London. The fixing approach for curtain rail brackets above a window in a lath and plaster wall requires locating the timber studs, which sit at approximately 400mm centres in Victorian properties and 450mm centres in Edwardian properties, rather than drilling into the plaster itself. A bracket fixed only into lime plaster with a standard wall plug will pull out under the weight of a lined curtain within months. We use a strong rare-earth magnet to locate the lath nails, which indicates the stud position, and fix into the stud with a 65 to 75mm screw.

For properties where drilling into the wall above the window is not possible, listed buildings, rental properties with restrictions on fixings, or properties where the plaster condition makes drilling inadvisable, we can advise on a picture rail curtain system using specialist hooks that allow curtains to hang from the original Victorian picture rail. This avoids all drilling into the wall and is a legitimate alternative in high-ceilinged rooms where the picture rail sits at the correct height relative to the window.

Mansion blocks and pre-war flat curtain rails

Mansion blocks in W1, W8, SW1, SW3, NW1 and NW3, the late Victorian and Edwardian apartment buildings of Marylebone, Kensington, Pimlico, Chelsea, Belsize Park and St John's Wood, present the same lath and plaster wall type as the period terraces, but with one additional complication: many mansion block walls, particularly in blocks built between 1900 and 1939, have concrete crosswalls above and between windows rather than timber-stud construction. The plaster finish looks and sounds the same as a lath and plaster wall, but the drill hits concrete after 3 to 4mm of plaster. We carry SDS hammer drills for exactly this situation.

Curtain track repair in London

Repair and replacement of failed curtain tracks is a regular part of our curtain rail fitting work across London. Original bay window tracks in Victorian and Edwardian properties frequently fail after 20 to 30 years of use, the glider runners wear through, the end stops break off, or the track develops a bow in the middle that prevents the curtains from drawing past the high point. In most cases a full track replacement is more reliable than a repair, but we assess the specific failure before recommending an approach.

For sagging tracks where the wall fixings have pulled out of lath and plaster, the repair requires re-fixing at the stud position rather than back into the original hole. We fill the original hole, locate the stud and re-fix at a position that gives the bracket the structural grip it needs.

Curtain rails in rental and managed properties

Managing agents and landlords regularly ask Silver Saints to fit curtain rails and tracks in rental properties as part of between-tenancy turnarounds, new letting setups and property refurbishments. We are experienced in selecting track systems that are robust enough for tenant use, in keeping wall impact to a minimum on delicate period plaster, and in combining curtain rail fitting with other tasks, blind fitting, mirror hanging, TV wall mounting, general maintenance, in a single visit to reduce the number of separate contractor appointments.

The multi-trade advantage

Unlike a specialist curtain fitter whose visit covers only curtains, a Silver Saints handyman can fit your curtain rails and then carry out other jobs in the same appointment: hang a mirror, fit a blind in a different room, mount a TV, fix a dripping tap or replace a light fitting. This eliminates the separate call-out fees that individual specialist visits would incur and saves you the time and disruption of multiple separate appointments.

Curtain rail fitting FAQs

Can you fit curtain rails today in London?

Same-day curtain rail fitting is usually available across London subject to handyman availability, so call Silver Saints on 0207 0999 199 before midday for the best chance of a same-day appointment, or book online at bookings.silversaints.com for a next-day slot Monday to Saturday.

How much does curtain rail fitting cost in London?

Silver Saints charges £60 plus VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 plus VAT for each additional 30 minutes with no call-out fee, most standard straight curtain poles are fitted within the first 30-minute charge, and bay window curtain tracks typically take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the bay width, angle and curtain weight.

Can you fit bay window curtain tracks in London?

Yes, Silver Saints measures the bay angle on site and fits flexible or jointed bay tracks bent or cut to the exact profile of each bay window, with brackets spaced correctly for the curtain weight, and Victorian bay windows in London are rarely a standard angle and must be measured individually to avoid the track gaps and sagging that result from an off-the-shelf fit.

Can you repair an existing curtain track?

Yes, Silver Saints repairs and replaces broken or sagging curtain tracks, including original bay tracks in period properties where the brackets have pulled out of lath and plaster walls, re-fixing at the timber stud position rather than back into the original failed hole to ensure a long-lasting repair.

Can you fit curtain rails for heavy or blackout curtains?

Yes, Silver Saints fits reinforced brackets at reduced centres and heavy-duty rails with centre support brackets where the curtain weight requires additional support, so heavier lined or blackout curtains are safely held and draw smoothly across a long span.

Can you fit curtain rails in listed buildings in London?

Yes, for listed buildings or properties where drilling is restricted, Silver Saints can advise on a picture rail curtain system using specialist hooks that allows curtains to hang from the original Victorian picture rail without drilling into the wall.

Do I need to supply the curtain rail or track?

Yes, you supply the rail, track or pole system, and Silver Saints provides the tools, correct wall fixings and expertise to install it accurately and advises on fixing position and bracket height at the start of the visit.

Can you fit curtain rails and blinds in the same visit?

Yes, Silver Saints handymen can fit curtain rails in one room and blinds in another in a single visit, eliminating separate call-out fees for what would otherwise be two specialist appointments.

Which London boroughs do you cover for curtain rail fitting?

Silver Saints covers all London boroughs for curtain rail fitting including Islington, Camden, Hackney, Wandsworth, Southwark, Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Westminster, Greenwich, Lewisham, Barnet, Ealing, Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton and Waltham Forest, plus the TW, KT, CR and BR postcodes.

Can you advise on bracket height and fixing position?

Yes, Silver Saints handymen assess the window, room proportions and any coving or architrave above the window to recommend the correct fixing height so curtains hang correctly and draw smoothly without catching on the window furniture or frame.
