What does furniture assembly cost in London?

Most single-item furniture assembly jobs are completed within the first 60 to 90 minutes. During this time your handyman reads the full instruction sequence before opening any bags, lays out all parts and checks for missing fixings, follows the manufacturer's assembly order correctly, and adjusts and levels the finished item. The time a job takes is determined almost entirely by the complexity of the instruction sequence and the number of components, not by the physical size of the item.

  • £60 + VAT for the first 30 minutes
  • £30 + VAT per additional 30 minutes
  • Saturday appointments at the same weekday rate

Why furniture assembly in London flats takes the time it takes

The single most common question at the start of a furniture assembly job is: why does it take longer than the box says? The answer is specific to London and to flat pack furniture generally.

London flats are small. A PAX wardrobe that would be assembled in a hallway in a Surrey house is assembled in the bedroom it will live in because the hallway of a Victorian conversion flat is too narrow to move it once built. This means the panels, the back board and all the internal fittings come into the room first, which takes time and requires more care to avoid marking the walls or the unfinished panels.

Victorian and Edwardian property floors are not level. Every floor in a pre-1930 London property has settled across a century or more of movement, and the deflection between one side of a room and the other is often 8 to 15mm. A wardrobe that is not levelled before the doors are hung will not close correctly, because the door frame goes out of square with the doors. We level the carcase before fitting any internal components using adjustable feet where provided and wooden wedges where not.

Instructions written for the global market are sometimes ambiguous or poorly sequenced. The correct assembly sequence for a PAX wardrobe with internal fittings is: assemble the carcase, hang the back panel before fully closing the sides, fit internal shelves and rail before the top panel is fixed, then level and wall-fix before doors go on. Assembling in the wrong order means disassembly. We read the full instruction set before starting and identify where the manufacturer sequence needs to be adapted for a small London room.

IKEA PAX wardrobe assembly in London

IKEA PAX wardrobes are the most commonly assembled item in London across all Silver Saints furniture assembly bookings. They represent the majority of wardrobe assembly requests in Islington, Hackney, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets and every other inner London borough where flat and apartment living means residents need to maximise storage in limited space.

The PAX system has specific assembly requirements that differ from standard flat pack. The back panel is thin hardboard that must be slotted before the carcase is closed, not added after. The cam locks that hold the carcase together must be hand-tightened and never power-drilled - a stripped cam lock housing cannot be reversed and leaves the joint permanently weakened. The adjustable feet must all be set to the same height before the wardrobe is stood up, then individually adjusted on the levelling nuts after it is upright, because adjusting feet once the carcase is loaded causes the panels to torque.

PAX wardrobes taller than 201cm are required by IKEA to be fixed to the wall. In a London plasterboard wall, this means locating the timber stud behind the board and using a long screw into the stud - a standard screw into plasterboard alone will not hold a wardrobe loaded with clothing, which can weigh over 80kg. In a lath and plaster wall, which is the standard wall type in any unrenovated Victorian or Edwardian London property, the fixing requires locating the stud position using a stud finder or rare-earth magnet and drilling at low speed to avoid cracking the plaster surface. We carry the correct fixings for both wall types.

PAX door alignment is the final step and the one most visible in the finished result. PAX hinges have three planes of adjustment - vertical, horizontal and depth. Doors that are not adjusted correctly will sit proud on one side, close with an audible click against the frame, or leave a visible gap at the top. We adjust all three planes before the job is considered complete.

Furniture assembly in London rental and managed properties

Furniture assembly in rental properties accounts for a significant share of Silver Saints bookings across London. The most common rental scenarios are: a tenant who has purchased flat pack and cannot assemble it before moving in, a landlord furnishing a property between tenancies with IKEA bedroom furniture to a higher specification, or a managing agent who needs a full flat furnished ready for a new let.

We are experienced in working within building management access requirements, protecting flooring and walls in properties with new carpets or freshly painted walls, and completing a tidy job that leaves the property ready for occupation. For landlords or agents furnishing multiple rooms in a single visit, a Silver Saints handyman can work through a list of items sequentially, from bedroom wardrobes and beds through to living room storage and dining furniture, at the standard by-time rate with no additional charges between items.

The multi-trade advantage

No furniture assembly specialist offers what Silver Saints provides: a multi-trade handyman who can assemble your furniture and then carry out other jobs in the same visit. Common same-visit combinations for furniture assembly include: fixing a blind or curtain rail in the same room, hanging a mirror or artwork, mounting a TV on the bedroom wall, replacing a light fitting, or making good a wall plug hole before fitting a new shelf. One visit, one invoice, no separate call-out charges between jobs.

Do you assemble IKEA furniture in London? Yes. IKEA PAX wardrobe assembly is the most common furniture assembly job across London.

Can you assemble IKEA PAX wardrobes in London? Yes. Silver Saints handymen assemble IKEA PAX wardrobes including internal fittings, door alignment and wall fixing. PAX wardrobes taller than 201cm require wall fixing — in London plasterboard walls we fix into the timber stud; in lath and plaster walls in Victorian and Edwardian properties we locate the stud and fix at low drill speed to avoid cracking the plaster.

Can you assemble furniture in a small London flat? Yes. Small flats in Victorian conversions and modern apartment blocks are the most common setting for Silver Saints furniture assembly across London. We are experienced in assembling furniture in the room it will live in rather than a separate space, working around tight doorways and narrow staircases, and adapting the assembly sequence for constrained spaces.

We are experienced in protecting floors and walls in newly carpeted or decorated properties and in completing a tidy job that leaves the property ready for occupation.

Can you fix a wardrobe to the wall in London? Yes. Silver Saints wall-fixes wardrobes and tall furniture units as part of the assembly visit. In plasterboard walls we locate and fix into the timber stud. In lath and plaster walls in Victorian and Edwardian London properties we locate the stud position and use the correct fixing depth and screw length for a secure hold.

Which London boroughs do you cover for furniture assembly? Silver Saints covers all London boroughs for furniture assembly including Islington, Camden, Hackney, Wandsworth, Southwark, Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Westminster, Greenwich, Lewisham, Barnet, Ealing, Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton and Waltham Forest, plus TW, KT, CR and BR postcodes.

What happens if parts are missing from the flat pack box? Your Silver Saints handyman will identify any missing fixings before starting assembly and advise on whether the job can proceed without them or whether replacements are needed. For IKEA furniture, replacement fixings can be collected from any IKEA store or ordered online from IKEA's spare parts service. We do not proceed with assembly where missing parts would compromise the structural integrity of the finished item.

Can you assemble garden furniture, BBQs or garden sheds in London? Yes. Silver Saints assembles outdoor furniture including BBQs, trampolines, garden sheds and children's climbing frames across London. BBQs typically take 30 to 90 minutes. Trampolines take 2 to 4 hours. Garden sheds and large climbing frames take 3 to 8 hours depending on size and complexity.
