How much does it cost to fit shelves in London?

Standard shelf fitting is charged by time, at £60 + VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 + VAT for each additional 30 minutes, and a single straightforward shelf is often done inside the first half-hour or hour.

  • £60 + VAT for the first 30 minutes
  • £30 + VAT per additional 30 minutes
  • Saturday appointments charged at the same weekday rate
  • No separate call-out fee
  • Bespoke shelving: a survey visit at £35 + VAT, followed by a fixed written quote

A worked example: a single floating shelf on a solid brick wall, marked level, drilled, plugged and fixed, is usually finished inside the first half-hour at £60 + VAT. A pair of shelves, or one shelf on dot-and-dab or a hollow stud wall where the fixing has to be chosen and set carefully, typically runs to an hour at £90 + VAT. The reason the time varies is the wall, not the shelf: on solid masonry the handyman is drilling and plugging in minutes, but on plasterboard the bracket has to be either landed on a stud or carried on the right cavity fixing, and getting a heavy shelf to hold on a hollow wall safely is where the care goes. A long alcove run with several shelves, scribed to out-of-square period walls, takes longer again and is quoted on the day or after a survey.

What we fit and how we do it

We fit every common type of shelf: floating shelves on concealed brackets, traditional bracket and wall-mounted shelves, adjustable twin-slot and bookcase systems, and bespoke built-in or alcove shelving made to measure. The job is never just "drill and screw": the first thing the handyman does is read the wall, because what holds a shelf safely on solid brick will pull straight out of plasterboard. We mark to a true level with a spirit or laser level, set the fixing centres to match the bracket, and choose the fixing to the wall, then check the finished shelf takes load without sag or movement. We can fit shelves you have already bought, including flat-pack floating units, or design and build a run from scratch.

Can you fit shelves on plasterboard and stud walls, and how much weight will they hold?

Yes, shelves can be fitted to plasterboard and hollow stud walls, but the safe load depends entirely on the fixing and whether the bracket can be landed on a timber stud. Wherever possible we locate the studs with a detector and screw straight into solid timber, which gives by far the strongest hold. Where a bracket falls between studs we use the correct heavy-duty cavity fixing, spring toggles or metal expansion anchors for heavier loads, not the cheap plastic plugs that tear out of plasterboard under weight. For anything heavy, books, a TV shelf, a run of kitchen storage, we will tell you honestly on the day what the wall will safely carry and recommend the right approach.

Fitting shelves to dot-and-dab walls

Dot-and-dab walls, where plasterboard is stuck to the masonry behind on dabs of adhesive with a void between, are one of the most common reasons a shelf fails, because a standard plug only grips the thin board and the hollow behind it. The correct method is to drill through the board and into the masonry behind, and use a fixing long enough to anchor into the solid wall, not just the board. This is routine in a lot of London new builds and refurbished flats, and it is exactly the kind of detail a generalist gets wrong and a Silver Saints handyman gets right, because a shelf that feels solid on the day but is only gripping plasterboard will pull away within weeks.

Shelf fitting across London property types

London walls vary enormously and dictate the fixing. In Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Wandsworth, Hackney, Islington and Camden we routinely meet lath and plaster on internal walls, which is brittle and needs a careful drill and the right anchor, and solid brick on party and external walls, which takes a standard plug and screw well. In Kensington, Chelsea and Marylebone mansion blocks the internal walls are often solid and dense, sometimes with old hard plaster, so a good SDS drill matters. In 1960s and 1970s blocks we find dense concrete and breeze block, which needs a hammer drill and proper anchors. In modern new-build flats around Nine Elms, Battersea and Canary Wharf the internal walls are usually dot-and-dab plasterboard or metal-frame stud, which is where fixing choice is everything. Telling us the wall and roughly what the shelf will carry when you book means we arrive with the right fixings and drill.

The expert detail that stops a shelf failing

Three things make the difference between a shelf that lasts and one that drops. First, the right fixing for the wall: a plastic plug in plasterboard is the single most common cause of a failed shelf, where a spring toggle or a fixing driven through to the masonry behind would have held. Second, level and alignment: brackets set even slightly off mean a shelf that slopes or rocks, so we mark from a true level and set the fixing centres precisely, not by eye. Third, load awareness: we match the fixing to what the shelf will actually carry, because a bracket fine for a few ornaments is not fine for a row of hardback books or a heavy mirror, and we would rather tell you the wall needs a different approach than fit something that fails. On period walls that are out of square, we scribe alcove shelving to the wall so it sits tight with no gaps.

Combine shelf fitting with other jobs in one visit

Because a Silver Saint is multi-trade, a shelf-fitting visit is a good moment to clear other small jobs in the same appointment and avoid a second call-out fee. Shelves often go up alongside hanging pictures, mirrors and paintings on the same wall, so the whole room is finished in one go. If you are setting up a room, it frequently pairs with furniture assembly for flat-pack units and bookcases. And where a shelf, blind or curtain rail all need to go up together, we can also handle blind and curtain rail fitting in the same visit. Mention everything when you book and we will send a Saint equipped for the lot.

Shelf Fitting FAQs

Can you fit shelves today in London?

Silver Saints usually offer same-day or next-day shelf fitting appointments across London, subject to availability, and you can call 0207 0999 199 or book online to secure the earliest slot.

How much does it cost to fit shelves in London?

Standard shelf fitting is charged at £60 + VAT for the first 30 minutes and £30 + VAT for each additional 30 minutes, Saturday appointments are charged at the same weekday rate, and bespoke shelving is quoted in writing after a £35 + VAT survey visit.

Can you fit shelves on plasterboard or stud walls?

Silver Saints fit shelves on plasterboard and hollow stud walls using the correct cavity fixings or by screwing into the timber studs, which carry far more weight than a standard plug in plasterboard alone.

Can you fit shelves to dot-and-dab walls?

Silver Saints fit shelves to dot-and-dab walls by drilling through the plasterboard and anchoring into the masonry behind with a long enough fixing, which is essential because a short plug grips only the thin board and the void behind it.

Can you fit floating shelves?

Silver Saints fit floating shelves on concealed brackets, marking them level and matching the fixing to the wall so the shelf sits flush with no visible supports and holds its load.

Can you build bespoke or alcove shelving to measure?
