Sash Cord Replacement
Silver Saints is London's Premier Handyman Service. One of the
many jobs we specialise in is replacing sash window cords and sash
spiral balances.
The sash cord is a vital part of a sash window. Over many
years of use the sash cord will wear and snap. In order for the
window to function properly a new cord will need to be
fitted.
Some modern sash windows have spiral spring balances
instead of sash cord and weights. These are made up of a plastic
tube and a metal torsion spring. Spiral balances do fail over time
and need to be replaced in order for the window to function
correctly. These sash balances are made up according to the
size and weight of a particular sash and so in order for us to
supply a suitable replacement we would need an initial visit to
take measurements and order the correct size balances.

How Long?
Exactly how long replacing broken sash cord
takes depends on which of the sash cords are broken.
If it is one or both of the inner sash cords (the cords
attached to the bottom sash) that need replacing, expect the job to
take between 1 -1 ½ hours.
If it is one or both of the outer sash cords (the cords attached
to the top sash) that need replacing, expect the job to take 1 -2 ½
hours.
What Else?
Depending on the age of the cords it is recommended to replace
both cords on any particular sash, even though only one cord may
actually be broken. If one cord on the window has already snapped,
chances are the other cord is reaching the end of its life.
